Linux Enterprise Server for Experienced UNIX Administrators

Audience

This class is designed for existing UNIX administrators who are moving over to a role that includes Linux administration.

Prerequisites

This Enterprise Linux for Experienced Unix Administrators course is aimed at delegates who have at least one years experience of administering another UNIX flavour (e.g., Solaris, HPUX, AIX etc.).

The course starts at a very high level and concentrates on the differences between UNIX administration and Linux Enterprise Server administration. The course is primarily aimed at Red Hat Enterprise (RHEL6), FedoraTM or CentOS systems.

Course Objectives

Enterprise Linux is finding its way into business, education and government. Due to its outstanding reliability, performance and low cost, RHEL is being used extensively for file, database and web server applications.

The course builds on the delegates current UNIX experience and introduces the differences between Unix systems and Enterprise Linux.

Topics include:

  • Creating a local area network
  • Setting up a Network File System server and clients
  • Network Information Services and DNS
  • An introduction to Samba to enable Windows based systems access to Linux services
  • The use of Apache for web server applications

Configuring Linux RAID devices

Understand the kernel and how it is recompiled
Setting up network client services
Sharing files with NFS
Sharing Windows and Linux resources with Samba
Setting up a proxy server with Squid
Setting up Network Information Services (NIS)
Configuring DHCP servers and clients
Setting up Domain Name Service (DNS) and BIND
Using Apache to provide web services
Setting up E-Mail services
Setting up telnet and FTP Services
Operational recovery and security
