platform and have practical experience with the commands and tools relevant to
application development and maintenance.
Attendees will require authority to create their own Schemas (Libraries), Tables
(Physical Files), etc. Source scripts will be provided to create a simple database for
subsequent data manipulation.
Attendee's PC's should be fully configured as detailed in a separate Checklist which
can be obtained on request.

Duration

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this training course, the attendee will:
• Gain a working knowledge of the SQL language
• Develop practical skills in the use of DDL and DML statements
• Make extensive use of the SELECT statement
• Gain hands-on experience with IBM i tooling for SQL
• Understand the IBM i implementation and adaptations for SQL

Course Content

SQL is the preferred facility for maintaining and manipulating the DB2 for i relational
database. Although DDS has been a reliable tool for data definition and data access,
it has not evolved in recent years to serve new business requirements. The SQL
language should be considered because:
• It is a widely used standard; skills are more readily available.
• It provides more and better options with which to access the database.
• IBM investment for database access and performance is focussed on SQL.
• Some database capabilities, (e.g. LOB support) are only available with SQL.
This practical Workshop will provide an introduction to the SQL language and the
various IBM i tools provided.

Topics:

1. Introduction
2. Creating SQL Objects (1)
3. SELECT Statement
4. Column Functions
5. Scalar Functions
6. Joining Multiple Tables
7. SELECT within SELECT
8. Creating SQL Objects (2)
9. Data Integrity
10.Other Considerations
