z/VM and Linux




AUDIENCE:   This programme is for companies who are introducing IBM’s VM Linux environment. The programme is modular and designed for systems programmers and operations staff. Applications developers, for whom an introduction to Linux is critical to a successful install, should also attend.

PREREQUISITES:   Delegates should be IT staff. No prior experience of VM or Linux is assumed.

DURATION:   Up to 20 days training depending on modules taken. Hands on.

OBJECTIVES:   The course combines lecture, practical and consultancy sessions that will prepare staff for the installation, maintenance and running of a VM / LINUX environment.

COURSE CONTENT:  

Module 1 - Linux the Essentials - 2.5 days
This module is for system programmers, application programmers and operators. Content includes Introduction, Accessing the System, Getting Help, Graphical Interfaces - Gnome and KDE, Tools available through the Graphical Interfaces, The LINUX Filesystem , The BASH Shell, Accessing and Using the Command Line, Commands and Utilities available at the Command Line, Editing Files, Printing Files, Understanding Processes, Directory and File Security - Permissions

Module 2 - Linux System Administration - 2.5 days
This module is for system programmers and operators. Verhoef Training can supply a Linux server running a Red Hat version of Linux or provide on-line access to our Linux servers. Includes: Overview, administrator roles, Configure X Windows, Documentation, users and groups, System Logs, hardware management, disk filesystems, processes, job scheduling, Installing applications, upgrading, backup and restore, LILO and GRUB, Boot and Shutdown, starting/stopping subsystems, Firewalls, Network Configuration, Recover from a variety of boot problems, Basic SAMBA configuration, printer administration.

Module 3 - z/VM - 10 days
This module is for system programmers, operators and any employees that need an understanding of the VM environment. Course includes: Overview of VM, CMS, XEDIT, ISPF differences, CP, system configuration, RSCS (Remote Spooling), volume management, hardware sharing, directory maintenance, performance, security (Top Secret), TCP/IP, Linux installation under VM.

Module 4 - VM Verification and Follow Up. - 3 days

Shell Programming: This course is for system programmers, application programmers and any employees that need to submit jobs etc to LINUX

Rexx Programming: REXX is an important component of V M but is also very useful in the OS/390/zOS environment when used to replace CLISTS etc. Verhoef offers highly regarded REXX courses and will discount these to your company by 25% off our standard rate, if you require the training at any time in the future.
